Non-Traditional Employment Options Focus of Conference for 8th Grade Girls
Girls from Michigan City, La Porte, New Prairie, Westville and South Central middle schools attended a workshop at the A. K. Smith Career Center on October 14th, aimed at introducing them to "NEW" opportunities (Nontraditional Employment for Women).
The daylong event featured a keynote address from engineer/architect Michelle Halle Stern, President of The Green Facilitator and a pioneer in sustainable building practices. Prominent female professionals led roundtable discussions, including LaPorte Mayor Blair Milo, HealthLinc Pediatrician Dr. Anna Adekugbe, Sullair Engineer Lisa Taylor, South Central Schools Superintendent Linda Wiltfong, and representatives from the South Bend Fire Department, Sunkissed Organics, the Indiana Department of Corrections, the Michigan City Sanitary District, and several other companies. Girls also had an opportunity to try some “hands on” activities relating to careers like welding, machining, thermal imaging, and emergency services.
We are grateful to the Michigan City Chamber of Commerce, the Michigan City Commission for Women, and Women in Leadership La Porte County for their sponsorship and assistance in organizing this workshop!
