Student-Created Wolf Sculptures Installed at Ames

Michigan City High School senior Da’Calvin Oliver will graduate on June 4 - but he leaves an artistic legacy at Ames Field.

On Thursday, May 25, he visited Ames to celebrate the installation of two large metal sculptures he designed and welded. He was joined by fellow classmates from the Welding and Manufacturing classes at the A. K. Smith Career Center, along with members of the MCHS Wolves Football team, who he said were the inspiration behind the design of one of the sculptures, which features a goal post and several wolves. The second sculpture is entirely his artistic design, a tribal motif of a wolf howling at the moon.

Oliver has also created two more sculptures for the Class of 2017, which will be displayed a location elsewhere in the City. He says he’s always been drawn to the artistic side of the craft he learned at A. K. Smith. “I really enjoy welding, but I also wanted to see what I could create,” he says.

A Welding Technology graduate of the A. K. Smith Career Center, Oliver will be heading to college in the fall at Vincennes University, majoring in Welding.
