The La Porte County Career and Technical Education program held a ribbon cutting ceremony on October 4 to celebrate the opening of its new in-house Cosmetology program serving students from across LaPorte County. The program operates a salon called “A.K. Scissory,” located at the Elston Building (317 Detroit Street) which is open to the public.

Cosmetology coursework centers on technical skills (hair styling, manicures, pedicures, facials, makeup, etc.) alongside business management concepts such as customer service, marketing, and basic accounting. Upon completion of the two-year program and 1,500 hours of training including hands-on experience with clients, students can earn an Indiana Cosmetology license. Dual Credits are offered through a partnership with Vincennes University.

Several project partners involved establishing the new program were present at the ribbon cutting ceremony, including Audra Peterson, Director, La Porte County Career and Technical Education; Janet Bianco and Amina Taylor, Cosmetology Instructors; Superintendents from all LaPorte County High Schools; and Cosmetology students from six La Porte County high schools.

A.K. Scissory hours are Monday/Tuesday/Thursday/Friday from 7:30am to 3:30pm and Saturdays 8:00am to 2:00pm. Walk-ins are welcome, or call 873-2121 for an appointment. Haircuts are free for veterans and active duty military.
