Barker's STEM Class Partners with Valparaiso University SWE
Barker Middle School STEM Class has established a new partnership with Valparaiso University's Society of Women Engineers (SWE)!Former Barker student and recent 2021 VU mechanical engineering graduate, Nicole Pomeroy, and Barker STEM Teacher & STEM Coordinator, Amy Hamann, have sparked a partnership with the university's SWE. Nicole is a former Barker student for 6th, 7th, & 8th grades and an MCHS graduate who competed in the VU Regional Science & Engineering Fair and the Hoosier State Science & Engineering Fair for 7 years in a row. She also has been a VU Regional Fair judge in her time at Valparaiso University--coming full circle! The VU SWE donated tubs of STEM Challenge supplies to Barker & Barker's STEM Class. They also wrote over 30 encouraging & positive notes to students to encourage them in STEM and any future goals. The future goal is for students in the SWE to come to Barker coach/mentor students in STEM Challenges & STEM Community Challenges. An additional goal is for students to guest speak about engineering programs at the university levels.Photo #1 (VU SWE Shoppers): Back row left to right: Daniel Owens, Mckenzie Pearson, Joely Overstreet, Isabella Palamaro, Alyssa Grant; Front Row: Nicole Pomeroy, Kylie Krawulski, Lia Boucek, Mia StroliaPhoto #2: left to right: (donated supply tubs in middle) Amy Hamann, Nicole Pomeroy, Mary Busby, Allie ArringtonPhoto #3: left to right: (donated supply tubs in middle) Principal Lucas Snyder, Nicole Pomeroy, Mary Busby, Allie Arrington, Amy HamannPhoto #4: Example Note written by SWE students to Barker STEM students
