"Gummy Bears in Space" STEM Community Challenge

Barker Middle School held it's first STEM Community Challenge of the school year to celebrate the end of American Education Week on Friday, November 17th.  The STEM Community Challenge was "Gummy Bears in Space".  The challenge was to build a catapult style device to launch a gummy bear the farthest distance and also added was an accuracy competition where teams had to launch the gummy bear onto a target on the floor from 9 feet away.  The target consisted of a dart board style with 200 points as the bullseye, then a 100 point ring, 50 points, 20 points, and 10 points as the outermost ring on the target.  Barker 7th and 8th grade Homerooms, Coolspring 5th and 6th grades, and Edgewood 5th grades built devices and competed in Preliminary Rounds in early November.  The top teams took on the only adult group this challenge, KTR Corporation.  The top teams competed in the Finale on November 17th in the distance competition and the accuracy competition.  Teams had two trials for each competition and an average was calculated for each competition determining the 3rd, 2nd, and 1st place teams for distance and accuracy.  Captain Ed from Captain Ed's Furniture & Candy Island made a guest appearance to shoot bags of gummy bears out of his custom made shooter into the student crowds at the end of the competition.
