BMS and Coolspring Students Triumph over KTR and Sullair Corporation
Barker held it's 2nd STEM Community Challenge for the 2015-2016 school year on Friday, February 26th to wrap up the school's week-long celebration of National Engineer's Week 2016. The STEM Community Challenge was "Hang Ten". Teams were to create a paper device to stay in the air the longest amount of time. Students researched helicopters, paper "whirly birds", parachutes, and paper airplanes amongst other topics. Teams acted as engineers as they brainstormed different ideas and held trials to conclude which of their ideas worked best for the competition. Students embraced this "Design Process" that real world engineers use in their careers everyday. Barker Homeroom teams and teams from Coolspring Elementary and Knapp Elementary competed in preliminary rounds. Top teams advanced to the finale who went up against KTR and Sullair Corporation. Coolspring Elementary top team of 6th graders were: Kohl Chapa, Carter Herrbach, Austin Nowatzke, and Riley Steinhiser. The Coolspring students are from Mrs. Caudle's and Ms. Rubeck's Science classes. Knapp Elementary top team of 5th graders were: Gabrielle Callahan and Audri Legros. The Knapp students are from Mrs. Kmeicik's and Mr. Schultz' Science classes. Teams had many different design ideas for the competition, showing that there isn't just one "correct" design!
The finale consisted of two trials and an average was computed. The top 6 teams had a "launch off" with two trials and an average figured where 3rd, 2nd, and 1st place teams were victorious. Finale participants were: Barker Homeroom Brennan, Coolspring Elementary "Pro Scopes", Barker Homeroom Gray, Barker Homeroom Sobecki, Barker Homeroom Masson, KTR Corporation, Knapp Elementary "Science Squad", Barker Homeroom Ramsey, Sullair Corporation, and Barker Homeroom Surma (known as "Surma-nation").
RESULTS:
6th Place, 1.9 seconds, Knapp Elementary 5th grade team "Science Squad"
5th Place, 2.38 seconds, Barker Homeroom Brennan
4th Place, 2.78 seconds, Barker Homeroom Ramsey
3rd Place, 2.84 seconds, Coolspring Elementary 6th grade team, "Pro Scopes"
2nd Place, 4.36 seconds, Barker Homeroom Masson
1st Place, 5.04 seconds, Barker Homeroom Surma
The 3rd STEM Community Challenge "Water Bottle Rockets" will begin mid-March and the finale will be held Friday, May 6th.
