    Child Find

The Michigan City Area Schools (MCAS) is responsible for locating, identifying, and evaluating all students between the ages of 3, but less than 22 years of age with a suspected disability who reside within the district boundaries. MCAS must provide a Free & Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) to all children, including those who meet eligibility in accordance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) & Article 7.  (Children younger than 3 can get help through IDEA’s early intervention services.)

To qualify for special education services, a student must have a documented disability that is covered by IDEA and need special education services in order to access the curriculum. This process involves a comprehensive evaluation. You or your child’s school can request an evaluation. If the district agrees to evaluate your child, the testing will be conducted at no cost to you. Children who are determined eligible for special education & related services are provided those services at no cost.

If you suspect your child may have a disability, please contact your child's teacher or building administrator. You may also contact the MCAS Office of Student Support Services at (219) 873-2000 ext. 8333 if you have any questions.
