Welcome to Physical Education (PE)!! All elementary students in Michigan City Area Schools receive 1 hour of PE weekly.Class is broken down into 3 basic activities: Warm ups, stretches, activity. Warm ups consist of students walking/jogging non-stop for 5 minutes. This teaches them to warm up their muscles before stretching. Creating this habit reduces soreness and injuries. Stretching includes practicing portions of the President's Challenge: v-sit stretch, sit ups and push ups. The President's Challenge is a fitness test administered to students in the fall (pre-test) and in the spring (post-test). Students are sent home a copy of their pre-test at the end of the first grading period. Activity is a sport, fitness component or cooperative skill/game. These are usually in 2 week units with the exception of fitness. Every month, 1 week of fitness is built in focusing on either strength, flexibility or endurance. All students are required to wear proper attire on the days they have PE. This means gym shoes. Students who do not bring gym shoes will not be able to participate at the capacity as the other students with gym shoes. Girls who wear skirts or dresses are encouraged to wear shorts under.
