Welcome to Second Grade! I am extremely excited to be your child's teacher! We will be learning many new skills this year. This year is a very crucial year in your child's academic development because second grade is the year that students move from learning to read — decoding words using their knowledge of the alphabet — to reading to learn. The books children are expected to master are no longer simple primers but fact-filled texts on the solar system, plants, animals and historical figures. Children who haven’t made the leap to fast, fluent reading begin at this moment to fall behind, and for most of them the gap will continue to grow. So second grade constitutes a critical transition. By working together, we can help your child develop the ability to read to learn and continue to foster a love for reading. If you ever have any questions or concerns regarding your child please contact me. I look forward to a year full of academic fun and achievement. You will find many helpful resources and web links on this web page. I find that some students may need or want extra reinforcement in Math or Language Arts, therefore I have many fun, educational web sites for your child to practice at home.
