Michigan City Area Schools is seeking a dynamic, experienced leader to serve as Director of Career and Technical Education for LaPorte County.Background
The LaPorte County CTE program is currently based at the A. K. Smith Career Center in Michigan City, Indiana. We serve approximately 350 juniors and seniors from all high schools in LaPorte County (Lacrosse High School, LaPorte High School, Michigan City High School, New Prairie High School, South Central High School, and Westville High School) and New Buffalo High School in Michigan.
Classroom, lab, and work-based learning experiences prepare our students for post-secondary success in college, apprenticeships, the military, or the workforce. Our students dress professionally, practice a strong work ethic, and earn dual credits in partnership with Ivy Tech and Vincennes University. They also earn state and national certifications that are in high demand by business and industry.

Michigan City Area Schools also oversees the LaPorte County Adult Education Program, which is housed at the A.K. Smith Career Center, providing evening courses, technical training, and high school equivalency preparation.
On the Move!
This is an exciting time for our career and technical education program! Michigan City Area Schools recently purchased the former Brown Mackie facility (located at Woodland Avenue and Rt. 20 in the heart of Michigan City) and has embarked on a $5.8 million renovation project at the site. The facility will house an early childhood program and will provide new classrooms, labs, and equipment for most of the programs currently housed at A. K. Smith, including Automotive, Welding, Machining, Construction, Education Professions, and more. The Director’s office will be relocated to the new facility, which is scheduled to open in 2024.

The LaPorte County Career & Technical Education Program works with an Advisory Board representing a wide spectrum of business and industry. Each Career Program also has an advisory group of professionals who serve as a resource for teachers.
LaPorte County CTE enjoys the active support of partner districts and our community, and maintains strong partnerships with industry and higher ed institutions in Michigan City and the greater Northwest Indiana region. Through student internships, field experiences, guest speakers, field trips, donations of equipment, career expos, training opportunities, and mock interviews, employers stay closely connected with our students and staff. We also work closely with the Center of Workforce Innovation on career readiness initiatives.

About the Community
Michigan City, Indiana, is located on the southern shore of Lake Michigan near the Indiana Dunes National Park – 55 miles east of Chicago and 10 miles southwest of the Michigan state line. The city’s economy features a sound industrial base accompanied by strong retail, service, and tourist sectors. Michigan City is a diverse community, offering many cultural events and opportunities to enjoy the fine and performing arts.
With a reputation as one of the Midwest’s best recreation areas, the lakefront is a key attraction year-round. A South Shore commuter rail double-track installation project now underway will drastically reduce commute times between Chicago and Michigan City. This $650 million project has sparked development in our city, with over 1,000 units of housing and retail space now under construction.
