Here at LaPorte County Career & Tech Ed., we strive to help young students become skilled professional adults. In the Welding Technology class, students work under the AWS (American Welding Society) standard, which is an internationally recognized standard for welding. Through the AWS the students will work towards an "AWS Entry Level One Certification."
Students also have the chance to receive 24 dual credits and can achieve their "Structural Welding" Technical Certificate from Ivy Tech.
We are proud to be a part of the student organization SkillsUSA where they have the chance at attending leadership conferences along with vocational skills-based competitions ranging from our field of Welding to Job Interview skills. In past years we have had two students win at the state level and move on to represent Indiana SkillsUSA at the national level of competition. Our students regularly place in the top 5 of their competitions at the regional and state level, which gain bragging rights for their skills, but also win equipment and scholarships. Here is a link to a quick video for the national leadership conference:https://youtu.be/PoaIoiLQuaY
We also have a very strong relationship with the Local 597 Pipe Fitters who's training facility is in Illinois and their foot print covers 4 states.
Every 2 years we take a field trip to Chicago to attend the FABTECH welding trade show where they get to see the state of the art upcoming equipment in the welding industry along with having the opportunity to try out some machines.
Our students not only learn to weld, but we have a CNC plasma table; students learn how to use CAD software on this to create programs to be cut out. Our shop offers 19 individual welding booths all fitted with a stick/tig welding machine along with 14 mig welders that can move from booth to booth.
