Welcome to Our ClassWelcome to the swimming area of Physical Education at Michigan City High School! Swimming is an important part of the physical education experience and all students will be expected to take part in swimming in each of the four school quarters of the school year. Classes will be divided into two groups for 3-4 weeks during each quarter. The first rotation is Learn to Swim segment where the swimmers are assessed according to their ability, and lessons are modified around the American Red Cross Levels 1,2,3 and sometimes Level 4 for those who progress rapidly or are already able to swim well. The following rotations will have fitness, recreations, safety, and general aquatic awareness presented to allow us to better take part in activities in an environment that covers about 3/4 of the earth.Students should bring their own towels, suits, and shower accessories and will be given extra time at the end of class to prepare for the next classes in their schedule. Those students that have medical releases or religious differences must have statements from physicians or clergy stating that the student is to be exempt which prevents them from participating in the class. Safety is important to learn and practice. A life guard watches over the classes and the instructor, Mr. Kovenz, is also a qualified life guard and emergency first aid qualified. The fear many bring to learning to swim may be dispelled and safety is an important part of our class behaviors.
