Welcome to 8th Grade English Language Arts and Advanced Literacy (2019-20)!

My name is Mr. Ramsey and I teach 8th Grade Language Arts and Advanced Literacy here at Barker Middle School. This is my sixth year at Barker. I currently teach 8th grade English Language Arts, as well as 8th grade Advanced Literacy.
What do we do in English Language Arts class?

The purpose of English Language Arts is to develop students' comprehension and capacity for use of written and oral language. We use various resources to accomplish this goal. These include novels, the Ready Reading book, vocabulary materials, Read Works, Common Lit, grammar materials, and other resources. The purpose of the 8th grade English Language Arts and Advanced Literacy classes is similar. However, the Advanced Literacy class provides an enriched experiences for students who have shown the capacity for higher-level work.

    Use of Technology
All our students currently have their own Chromebooks, which we use on an almost-daily basis. All daily work will be posted on Google Classroom; this is the best way for you to keep up to date on what we are doing in class, and to see when assignments are due.  Your student can log in to Google Classroom from home using his or her Google log-in, and work from home if necessary.  You can also check Google Classroom to check daily assignments in the event your student is absent from school.
You are also encouraged to use the "Parent Access" feature on RDS to check your student's progress regularly.  I am happy to answer any questions you may have (please feel free to call or email), but the best way to keep up to date will be Google Classroom and RDS.
    E-Learning Days
MCAS is using E-Learning days in the event of bad weather, as we did last year.  In addition, there are a number of E-Learning days built into the schedule:  September 30, November 5, December 9, March 2, and May 5. On those days, students should connect from home to complete the assignments in all their classes. I will list each E-Learning day's work on this website, and students will complete the work using Google Classroom. On E-Learning days, please feel free to get in touch with me by email with any questions.
    Online Resources
There are many online resources which can help students succeed in Language Arts.  One of the best is Purdue's Online Writing Lab ("OWL").  I recommend that students and parents become familiar with this resource, which can be found at https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/.
