  • The LaPorte County Career & Technical Education Fire Science class is a year-long course that is conducted Monday-Friday from 7:30 - 9:35 a.m. at the AK Smith Career Center in Michigan City, Indiana. At the completion of this class, students have the opportunity to earn the Indiana Firefighter I and Firefighter II certifications through the Indiana Department of Homeland Security. In addition to Indiana State certifications, the LPCCTE Fire Science class offers students the ability to earn up to 18 college credits through a dual-credit program with IVY Tech Community College.

The LPCCTE Fire Science class is a combination of both rigorous academics and hands-on skills; for Indiana Firefighter I and II certifications, the IDHS requires candidates to pass a written test, as well as, demonstrate competency in various practical firefighting skills.
