    Dear Parents-

Welcome to 2nd Grade!  I am anticipating a fabulously productive and exciting school year ahead!  I would like to share some information regarding our policies and procedures that we will be following this school year.

    Classroom Rules/Management

I try to create a positive atmosphere in my classroom where students are made to feel that they have endless possibilities to be the best that they can be if they make the right choices.   Our classroom rules are as follows:

    1. Follow directions quickly.
    2. Raise your hand for permission to speak.
    3. Raise your hand for permission to leave your seat.
    4. Make smart choices.
    5. Be respectful.

    Class Dojo

I use Class Dojo in my classroom for behavior management and to communicate with parents.  Students will be awarded points for following class rules, and they may lose points for misbehavior.  You can message me on this site with any concerns or questions. I often use this to contact you if need be.  I will be sending home directions on how to get on this site along with your child’s specific code in the next few days.  You can use a phone, tablet or computer to access this. Please let me know if you have any questions.

On Mondays, the students will be given 20 spelling words on the pre-test.  The spelling list is made up of words that fit a specific pattern, word wall words, and vocabulary words.  Your child is only responsible for the words that they missed on the pretest for the test on Friday.  These words will be circled on their spelling list.  Students will not be given more than 15 words.   If your child does not miss any words on the pretest, they will receive an A for the spelling test and will be excused from the spelling homework for the week.

Homework is intended to provide extra practice for students.  It also helps them learn to practice responsibility. A homework packet will be assigned on Monday and will be due on Friday.  However, spelling words are to be studied every evening.  This is a standing homework assignment. Reading something every night is also a standing homework assignment. I cannot stress enough the importance of practicing reading at home.  Your child can read a variety of things: a story, the newspaper, a magazine article, etc. These are all good ways for students to practice reading something that is of interest to them.

Students are expected to complete homework on time.  They are also expected to do their personal best and show quality work.  Turning homework in on time is your student’s responsibility and counts toward his/her behavior grade.  Students will not be allowed to call home for forgotten homework. The only reason that late homework will be accepted without a loss of points is if your child is absent on Friday (the day homework is due).  Homework may be turned in at any time during the week when the packet is completed, but it is due on Friday.

    BLUE Take Home Folders

This folder will come home each Monday.  In this folder will be the spelling list, the week’s homework packet, and the previous week’s tests and work.  There will be a sheet inside for you to sign and for me to share any comments or concerns with you. This sheet is for you to do the same.  If you have any questions or concerns, you may indicate them on the sheet. The student is expected to return the folder WITH the sheet SIGNED on Tuesday.  All other papers are to remain at home.  The consequence for failing to return this folder signed by an adult is the loss of recess or free time.  Please help your child practice the life skill of responsibility by returning this folder, as well as homework on time.

    Tuesday Take Home Folders

There will be a folder that will come home each Tuesday.  This folder is from the office and will have any information that the office, local organizations, etc. wish to share.  This folder is to be returned on Wednesday with signed sheet.

    Treats For The Class

We welcome any treats that you would like to send in for the class for a special occasion or birthday.  If you are sending a treat, please be sure that it is individually wrapped, store bought, and HEALTHY. (This is a state law.)  If you are sending something in, please be sure that you send all of the appropriate items with the treat.  (For example, if you send in a gallon of juice, please send cups.) Also, if there are leftovers (for wrapped items such as fruit snacks, etc.) please indicate if you would like them sent home or if you would like to donate them to our class treat bucket.  We currently have 26 students in our class.

    Special Needs

If your child has any special needs (medication, medical issues, restroom issues, etc.) please be sure that I am made aware of them so I can address them as needed.

    Water Bottles

I allow students to bring water bottles to use during class time. These are to be plastic bottles.  Only plain water may be in them.  Students are allowed to keep these bottles at their seats as long as they can use them responsibly.  If a student abuses this privilege, the water bottle will be sent home.

I see the home school connection as being an extremely important one.  We are a team! We have the same goal in mind: making your child as successful as possible.  We cannot accomplish this goal without working together. I truly look forward to working with you and your child this school year.
