Welcome to Career Skills
This program is a combination of classroom and laboratory activities that provide the fundamentals necessary to obtain employment in the facilities maintenance field. Students also explore housekeeping and entry-level positions in the hopitality industry. The goal is to prepare students, through practical experiences in real-worl enviornments, so that they may work independently. This class is perfect for special-needs students or for those who have an interest in fixing things! If you like doing something different every day, this is a great fit for you.

Meet the Teacher
Mrs. Patterson comes to the LaPorte County Career and Technical Education A.K. Smith Career Center after teaching in a self-contained Special Education classroom at Michigan City High School for the past three years. Prior to that, she was the Facility Maintenance teacher here at A.K. Smith Career Center for two years. Mrs. Patterson has a passion for seeing her students excel and become happy and productive citizens within our community. Students from previous classes are currently employed at area employers such as Integrative Flavors, Walmart, Meijer, Menard's, Al's, Michigan City Streets and Sanitation Department, and Blue Chip Casino.
Mrs. Patterson has her master's degree in Special Education from Purdue University Northwest and a master's degree in Adult Learning from Waldron University. She has years of experience in teaching and tutoring at Ivy Tech Community College and assisting in the MCAS Adult Education program.
