Welcome to Joy Elementary School! We are the largest of eight elementary schools in the Michigan City Area Schools district, serving kindergarten through sixth grade students. Joy Elementary opened in 1962 and was named after the Joy Manufacturing Company, which was located for many years a block away from our school. Our school was renovated in 1989 and today offers many incredible learning opportunities for children.
As Vikings, we recognize that all students are unique, and their learning needs and styles are unique as well. We strive to create an exceptional learning environment focused on continuous quality growth for all children. We monitor individual student performance and provide differentiated instruction, interventions and programming to meet individual social, emotional and academic needs. Differentiated instruction is occurring in all classrooms. For some students, that means academic rigor beyond the local and state standards. For other students, we maximize our resources and technology to provide additional opportunities to learn.
As the principal, I proudly share that we have highly effective teachers and staff working with our children. They work diligently to build positive relationships with students and design meaningful, engaging work in the pursuit of learning. While we embrace the various cultures and varied backgrounds of our students and families, our expectations remain high to cultivate college ready, global citizens. We model and discuss our Habits of Character stressing to students the importance of Respect, Empathy, Kindness, Responsibility, and being Open to Diversity.
