Learning How We Prepare for Jobs
On November 30, 2012, students from Mrs. Kuehl's first grade class at Marsh Elementary visited the A. K. Smith Center to see what happens in LaPorte County CTE classes. This field trip tied in with a five-week Junior Achievement unit, during which the children learned about families, jobs, wants and needs, and map reading. The class discussed how people acquire the skills they need for jobs...which help them pay for their wants and needs! Special thanks to Mrs. Shriner and her Early Childhood Education Class, which led first graders on the tour of the A. K. Smith Center. A Message from the Director...

With passion and purpose, the experienced instructors and dedicated staff of the A.K. Smith Career Center provide LaPorte County high school students with meaningful opportunities to achieve their goals.  Here, students learn from professionals in their fields as they explore career options, build work ethic, prepare for life in a global economy and, in many cases, earn industry certifications and college credits.
 
Audra Peterson Regardless of which program of study they pursue, our students engage in a rigorous curriculum and gain a broad academic knowledge base.  We deliver hands-on classroom experience in each career path as well as job shadowing experiences and internships.  Many students juggle their regular high school extracurricular activities with Career Center studies, giving them yet another taste of life in the busy working world.
